Return Path Certification through JangoMail

Program Overview:

The Return Path Certification program, also known as "Bonded Sender" is a third-party whitelisting program used by over 50,000 ISPs, universities, and organizations around the world, including MSN, Hotmail, and RoadRunner, to identify legitimate email. It is designed to identify legitimate senders of email based on adherence to the Return Path standards so that legitimate commercial emails are not inadvertently caught in spam filters. JangoMail is a certified reseller of the Return Path Certification program, and therefore existing JangoMail customers have the option of applying for and participating in the program.

What are the benefits?

If you are accepted into the program, then all emails sent from your account will be sent from special servers that are whitelisted with the Return Path Certification program. These servers are designated exclusively for those JangoMail customers which are accepted into the program. The main benefit is increased deliverability -- your emails have a much less chance of being flagged as spam if they are sent from a Return Path server. A Return Path Certification case study revealed that for Internet media giant CNET, participation in the Return Path Certification program yielded a 15% increase in email open rates.

How does it work?

The Return Path Certification program maintains a list of IP addresses that are enrolled in the program and therefore "certified". The Return Path program offers email receivers, like ISPs and corporate domains, the list of certified IP addresses at no charge. Email receivers then use the list to assist in identifying legitimate email, resulting in a higher delivery rates for senders in the program.

Do I qualify for Return Path Certification?

The official program standards include qualitative standards and quantitative standards here, but a summary of the standards are below:

  • You have used JangoMail to send at least three emailings to the majority of your list within the last three months, and your emailings have not resulted in excessive complaints.
  • Subject line and content of every email message must not be false or misleading.
  • All of your recipients must have either a prior business relationship with you or must have consented to receive emails from you. Acceptable methods of consent include double opt-in, opt-in with verification, opt-in, pre-selected option with verification, or pre-selected option. A prior business relationship exists if the recipient has purchased a product/service from you within the past 18 months or the recipient consensually provided his/her email address.
  • Third party and rented lists are acceptable as long as they went through a co-registration process where: a) the organization that purchases the email list was clearly named to the recipient at the time the recipient signed up, b)proof of consent to join the list can be provided by the list owner for each recipient on the list.
  • You may not send to addresses that have been harvested off the Internet (web sites, news groups, etc.).
  • All emails must contain a valid unsubscribe mechanism.
  • You must manually process unsubscribe requests that are sent back to you as replies to your emailings.
  • If you send from a non-jangomail.com domain, you must ensure that abuse@yourdomain.com and postmaster@yourdomain.com are valid addresses and that complaints sent to these addresses are responded to within 5 business days.
  • If you send from a non-jangomail.com domain, you must ensure that there is an Abuse.net (www.abuse.net) listing for every domain included in any From Address.
  • If you send from a non-jangomail.com domain, and you elect to have JangoMail not handle bounces, thereby using your own From Address as the Envelope-From (or SMTP FROM) in an SMTP transaction, you must create and maintain a valid SPF/SenderID record for your domain that grants JangoMail permission to send for your domain. For more information on how to setup the record, see this document.
